The Opal Apartments

Affordable Housing Branding & Naming

Every color, one stone.

What State of Assembly helped clarify

This is a community of resilience, dignity, and a spectrum of identities.

How they were once seen.

Six partners. Six sets of values. A church, an LGBTQ+ senior community, an investor, a property manager, and a developer. Each with strong convictions about what this place should be called. A vote risked creating winners and losers among people who needed to build.

What we uncovered.

The name couldn't belong to any single partner. It had to emerge from what they shared. Through facilitated conversations, recurring themes surfaced: resilience, diversity, a spectrum of identities held in one community. An opal contains every color without losing any of them. No vote could have produced that. The name became proof that six voices could speak as one.

How They Needed to Be Seen

A community where dignity is tangible. Named by what unites. Six visions for home found a single word that held them all without flattening any of them. The name is the first thing they built together. Every design choice after it followed the same principle.
Every resident's identity belongs.
Every color, one stone. Precious from every angle.
"The meaning behind it suits our project well. Thank you!"
